Welcome to Cat Island

Discover one of the most beautiful islands of the Bahamas. If you have to describe Cat Island in one word, it would be ‘untouched’ because there are endless flawless beaches, whose fine sand feels like velvet under your feet. Crowds or the noise of motor boats are foreign words. Only gentle sounds of the surf, which gently rinses ashore, surround the imposing nature of Cat Island, which also enchants underwater through its coral reefs with a beautiful flora and fauna.

The Island

Cat Island – an unpolished jewel of the Bahamas. The island stretches for about 80 km and is between 1-15 km wide. About 80% of the coasts have snow-white sandy beaches. The main places are New Bight, Arthur’s Town and Port Howe. A special place to get away is the 63 meter high Mount Alvernia (the highest point in the Bahamas). Here monk Father Jerome built a monastery by his own hermitage. The Hermitage is now the landmark of Cat Island. The famous rake, n ‘scrape music that can be heard on all the Bahamas is originally from Cat Island.

… and their inhabitants

The approximately 1,200 inhabitants are extremely hospitable, every tourist is welcome. For example, it is common for everyone to greet everyone. At the same time you get a friendly smile. Generally, there is virtually no crime on every Bahamian island. Instead, friendliness is very important. The Bahamas are Christian. For this reason, there are many old and beautiful churches on Cat Island, where services are made very happy. Dancing, clapping and singing to traditional gospel songs are part of this. Of course every guest of the island is welcome to join in the celebration – a great experience of the Bahamian joie de vivre and cordiality. The annual highlight on the island is the Jankadoo Carnival, which takes place in February compared to Nassau not Christmas and New Year. Here is colorfully dressed, celebrated with original African dances and lots of music. Sailfans will enjoy oneself at the Cat Island Regatta in July / August.

The history of Cat Island

Cat Island – the pirate island. There are many stories about the naming of the island. At first, one story is about that landed here, so that the island was called San Salvador. After many disputes, instead, a neighboring island was designated as the destination and a new name had to be found. Another story is about the infamous pirate Arthur Catt, who came to the island regularly to bury his treasures and gave her the name “Catt’s Island”. The island is full of living history. The historic main attraction is the Hermitage, the last resting place of Father Jerome. The island is full of overgrown mansions and ruins that remains of slave settlements – a perfect place to explore and discover. And even today, the sparsely populated island is a perfect retreat. No longer for pirates, but for travelers who wants to escape the tourist crowds.

The weather on Cat Island

Cat Island is also known for its balanced climate, which is favored by the maritime insularity. In winter, temperatures seldom drop below 25/20 degrees C ° and in summer they barely exceed 35/29 degrees C °. Since the house is located directly on the coast, usually comes a pleasant breeze from the sea, which makes even higher temperatures appear pleasant. The water temperatures in winter are between 23 and 24 degrees C ° and in summer between 25 and 27 degrees C °. Rain showers appear predominantly short and strong at night. During the day you can usually count on blue skies and sunshine. In the off-season from September to October is sometimes synonymous with a tropical cyclone expected. The White Ocean Coral was built entirely with reinforced concrete using German engineering. All window and door windows are approved for hurricanes of the highest category, so that you can thoroughly enjoy the holiday even by these weather phenomena, by sitting down in the living room and watching the hustle and bustle on the sea.

Flora and Fauna

On the island you can find the typical flora of the Caribbean. There are dense bush forests with various types of palm trees and other trees. Most plants are evergreen. If you roam the island, you can still find very rare or exotic plants such as the mahogany (Madeira Birch) or various types of cactus and succulents.
Around the whole island are still untouched extensive coral reefs to be found. Partly they protrude so far to the shore. The seawater is very clean here, in front of the Outer Islands, and has a large biodiversity of tropical marine animals. Already from the beach you can observe various smaller and larger fish such as stingrays or turtles. A snorkeling trip around the reefs close to the beach is a real highlight.
Essentially all the crab species known in the Caribbean live on the island, smaller lizards, snakes insects and arthropods. There are no animals here that could seriously endanger humans. Even the bite of a tarantula or the sting of a scorpion is no worse than a wasp sting. However, allergy symptoms should be carefully monitored. The snakes living here can reach a length of up to 2.5 m and are all snarls (no poison). They specialize in crabs and lizards and are harmless to humans.
